For the Owls to get much joy out of Derby County’s mean defence this weekend, Carlos Carvalhal’s side will be hoping his little magician shines on the big stage.

Fernando Forestieri is expected to line-up against the Rams for the first time since he was targeted by the club over the summer.

Derby had a £7million bid for the forward turned down last August.

Just days after the offer was rejected, Forestieri, who top-scored for the Owls last season with 15 goals, refused to play in their goalless draw at Norwich City.

Forestieri later apologised to his teammates, Carvalhal and the club’s fans for his “unprofessional and unacceptable” behaviour. He said he never wanted to leave Hillsborough, claiming it was a “misunderstanding”. The former Italy Under-21 international was fined by the Championship club.

Forestieri said: “I have said before that I love the club and everything and if the chairman gives me a 10-year contract, I can give my career as I love the fans and everyone. I never said (I wanted to leave) and Carlos [Carvalhal] knows and I speak face to face with him and he understands me and that is the most important thing and I have an amazing relationship with him.”

Since being reintegrated back into the team as a substitute at Burton Albion, Forestieri has bagged two goals in 12 outings.

Midfielder David Jones, who faces one of his club’s on Saturday, told The Star: “We know what ability Nando has got and how good a player he is.

“He obviously has got the quality to be a top striker. I have played against him many times and he has always been a threat and a player you have to look out for.

“I train with Nando every day and I appreciate the quality that he brings.”

Although Derby lie fourth-from-bottom, defensively they have been difficult to break down, recording six clean sheets in 14 matches and only shipping in 11 goals.
