Sheffield Wednesday reported back for pre-season training at their Middlewood Road training base yesterday, but there were four notable absentees.

Goalkeeper Chris Kirkland, defenders Glenn Loovens and Oguchi Onyewu and midfielder Jose Semedo did not take part in the morning or afternoon sessions.

The quartet have yet to commit their futures to the Championship club despite being offered new deals following the conclusion of the Owls’ 2013/14 campaign.

Wednesday head coach Stuart Gray has told The Star that the club remain in discussions with their representatives.

Owls chairman Milan Mandaric said: “We are in the final dialogue with their agents. I don’t foresee any obstacles.”

Kirkland, Loovens and Onyewu and Semedo have all indicated to Gray that they want to stay put.

“At the end of the day, the fans enjoy their performances and commitment,” said Gray. “I want them to stay and so do they. Hopefully we can get it rubber-stamped and get them through the door.

“I have looked Jose [Semedo] and Chris [Kirkland] in the eyes and I know they want to stay here.”

It was just over a month ago Wednesday lodged an offer to free agent Sam Hutchinson. Gray’s men are waiting to hear back from the utility man. Millwall are also in contention to sign Hutchinson.

Wednesday’s home fixture with Nottingham Forest on Saturday August 30 will be televised live on Sky. Kick-off has been brought forward to 12.15pm.
