SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY: Ryan Lowe given the chance to shine

SHEFFIELD Wednesday manager Dave Jones says players such as striker Ryan Lowe deserve their chance in the Championship.

Lowe is one of a number of Owls players who haven’t played above League One but will be given an opportunity to show they can cut it at a higher level by Jones.

Having been signed by Jones’s predecessor Gary Megson last August from Bury, Lowe, aged 33, scored nine goals in 14 starts for Wednesday.

And although he was used primarily off the bench when Jones took over for the final 12 matches of the promotion winning campaign, Lowe remains very much part of the manager’s plans: “This is what players have worked all their careers for.

“I’d very much hope he’s looking forward to it (the Championship).”

Jones has already added former England international goalkeeper Chris Kirkland to his squad and brought in full backs Joe Mattock from West Brom and Kieran Lee from Oldham Athletic.

A move for Crystal Palace centre half Anthony Gardner may be completed this week with Jones saying he’s still working on several deals.

“There’s lots of things going on at the moment.”
