Steven Fletcher has been declared fit for Scotland’s crunch World Cup qualifier away to England tomorrow night.

The big striker was a major injury concern for the Tartan Army after sustaining a knee problem in Sheffield Wednesday’s 2-1 defeat to Ipswich Town last weekend.

But Fletcher, who has bagged three goals since moving to Hillsborough, has shrugged off the knock and started again with the rest of Scotland’s squad on Wednesday.

There is a distinct possibility that the 29-year-old could spearhead their attack at Wembley, with his Owls teammate Barry Bannan lining up in midfield. Fletcher and Bannan will be aiming to add to their 30 and 24 caps respectively.

Scotland have slipped to fourth in Group F after picking up just one point from their last two qualifiers.

“We’ve not been too pleased with the last two performances,” admitted Scotland manager Gordon Strachan, who is under pressure to turnaround their fortunes. “We are desperate to catch up and make up ground.

“This game is a chance to catch up. It’s a chance to feel better about myself. Over the past few years I haven’t felt decent about myself.

“As a manager you often think, who is going to let me down but not with this team. This is a great group of lads to work with. I never go to bed thinking someone is going to let me down and someone isnt going to give me 100 per cent.”
