VIDEO: Former footballers get on their bikes and head for Holland in the name of charity

Viv Anderson and Danny Wilson may have hung up their boots quite some time ago but they have been proving there’s plenty of life in the legs.

The former Sheffield Wednesday pair have been pulling on the lycra for a mammoth cycle that started in South Yorkshire and will end up in Amsterdam by the end of the weekend.

It’s all in aid of Prostate Cancer UK and the ex-Owls pair were joined by another who pulled on the blue and white of Wednesday, albeit briefly - Preston North End boss Simon Grayson.

And those three were far from alone.

Around 170 riders of all ages and abilities and from all over the north of England, turned up at Oakwell to begin a journey that would take them from Barnsley to Hull by Friday teatime with the ultimate aim of being in Amsterdam by Sunday.

And most of it on two wheels.

“I did it last year and why I’m back here again I do not know because it was hard,” joked Anderson. “But it was enjoyable. People get you round which is great. I remember last year an old man and his daughter pulling me around which was great.”

Football to Amsterdam is one of a number of projects Anderson has been involved in for Prostate Cancer UK.

“I’ve been doing little bits for years and they said last year they were starting a bike ride and would I like to start it. There was a pause because i hadn’t been on a bike for 30 years and then I said ‘go on then’ and that was it.

“It was harder than you think. I did quite a lot of training and work on my fitness but you never know until you get started. It was quite gruelling but getting to the end,I was very pleased.”

This time he’s brought old team mate Wilson along for the ride.

“Viv roped me into it about six weeks ago - he railroaded me a little bit but I’m delighted I’m here. It’s a great cause and if we can contribute we’ll do all we can.”

And is six weeks enough notice?

“I’ll tell you on Sunday!.We have been trying to get out and do the miles but we will be looking to the experienced lads to pull us through, added Wilson”
