Chesterfield had only won one second round tie in the FA Cup in the last 34 years – and in that season they made the semi finals! But today they pulled off an historic victory with a third - and never before had they won a second round tie away from home against a side from the same division who sit above them in the league table.

Half time and no goals but Chesterfield’s game plan has worked in every way bar leading to a goal.

Spireites pressed hard and pressed high and consistently prevented MK Dons from getting into any sort of rhythm. Right from the first whistle, Chesterfield’s four man midfield and two man attack have forced the hosts into mistake after mistake and poor pass after poor pass; that said, the game’s best chances fell to Dons.

Benik Afobe saw Tommy Lee win a one on one but the loose ball ran to League One’s most vaunted young player Dele Alli and he missed the target from the box edge with only Tendayi Darikwa on the line looking to block any shot.

Darren Potter forced another decent Lee save from an angled effort, but that was it for League One’s top scorers.

As for Paul Cook’s side, Armand Gnanduillet found himself in a glorious spot but didn’t manage to deliver a shot, Tendayi Darikwa clipped just over from the edge of the six whilst Gary Roberts hit the side netting as the vast majority of play occurred in the home side’s own half.

Chesterfield grabbed the winner in the 53rd minute with Armand Gnandiullet’s header.
