Rovers suffered another defeat as struggling Notts County clawed their way out of the relegation zone with a battling 2-1 win.

County always looked like they wanted and needed it more against a lacklustre Rovers outfit who never really got going.

Garry Thompson fired County ahead after eight minutes with Liam Noble doubling the advantage just after the hour.

Nathan Tyson scored a penalty five minutes into injury time but it was hardly a deserved consolation for their afternoon’s effort.

Rovers’ defence looked disorganised as Thompson pounced on Jimmy Spencer’s blocked shot to drill past Marko Marosi on the keeper’s full league debut.

Victory is vital for County who could be relegated today if results do not go their way.

And they started with real energy and endeavour, penning Rovers into their own half.

Opportunities for attacks were scant for Rovers in the early minutes but Nathan Tyson did drill wide from 12 yards moments before Spencer gave the hosts the lead.

County lost their fizz as the half wore on and Rovers began to enjoy more possession.

Both Harry Forrester and James Coppinger fired narrowly over the bar from almost identical positions just outside the box.

But Rovers would ultimately fail to register a shot on target before the half time whistle.

It was the hosts who once again started the brighter in the second half and they got their reward just after the hour mark.

Graham Burke floated a cross into the area and Noble lost his man, brought down the ball and slotted it past Marosi.

County seemed happy to consolidate their two goal lead and eased off but Rovers had no further joy on a difficult afternoon.

The consolation came deep into injury time when Haydn Hollis was adjudged to have fouled Tyson in the box, allowing the striker to slot home from the spot and move top of the Rovers scoring charts.
