Rotherham United centre-half Kari Arnason is hoping to cap one of the best weeks of his life with victory over Leeds United tonight.
Arnason was part of the Iceland team which beat Holland 2-0 in a Euro 2016 qualifier on Monday night - his 32nd birthday - to preseve their 100 per cent record at the top of Group A.
“It was a great birthday present. It was brilliant,” he said.
“We all know their players like Robin van Persie and Arjan Robben so what we did was close them down from every angle.
“The plan was, don’t sell yourself, don’t get beaten one v one.
“It’s a media frenzy in Iceland. They all love it because we’re top of the group.”
The Millers could go above Leeds if they beat them at New York Stadium.
“What a result that would be,” Arnason said. “Leeds United are one of the biggest clubs in the world.”
He revealed that Xavi and Zlatan Ibrahimovic are the best players he has faced internationally.
“Against Spain I was playing in midfield,” he recalled. “Eidur Gudjohnsen told me before the game ‘don’t ever think you can get the ball off him’. I tried to go for the ball once and he just nutmegged me.
“Ibrahimovic, you can’t really play against him. If he’s on it, there’s nothing you can do. He’s so strong and tall, but he’s quick and very technical at the same time.”
