Rotherham United are in the hunt for a new centre-half, but boss Steve Evans knows he already has a quality performer waiting in the wings.
The Millers, who head to Huddersfield today for a Championship Yorkshire derby, are in talks with two clubs about bringing in a defender on loan.
But Evans knows the need for a fresh face is less intense if they can get captain Craig Morgan fit again after he suffered a twisted knee in training.
“I’m desperate to get our skipper back in the side because he has simply been our best defender this season,” said the Millees manager.
Morgan’s involvement this afternoon depends on how well he trained yesterday. The club rule is that a player has to train at 100 per cent on a Friday to be considered for weekend action.
New signing Daniel Lafferty is expected to be pitched straight in today for the 21st-placed Millers who are six points clear of the drop zone, casting a doubt on the future of Crystal Palace loan defender Zeki Fryers who has been occupying the left-back berth.
“Nothing changes with Zeki. He’s here for another couple of weeks. That was always the plan,” said Evans.
“We have an option to take that towards the end of the season. Zeki had a poor game against Cardiff on Tuesday, but he was one of eight or nine.
“If you look at his second half against Millwalllast Saturday it was probably the best he’s played for us. You have to take a balanced view when you’re a manager and not go on your reaction to one match or a couple of mistakes.”
Striker Danny Ward plays against his former club, and Evans added: “It’s a big one for Danny. He’s worked so hard behind the scenes to achieve match fitness. He scored against Millwall and he scored the other night. We’re so pleased for him.”
Centre-back Joel Lynch (groin) is back in training for Huddersfield while boss Chris Powell is hopeful left-back Jack Robinson (knee) will be fit, but striker Nahki Wells (shoulder) is a doubt.
After a poor recent run, Powell said of his 16th-placed side: “The season certainly isn’t over. I’ve told the players never to assume they are safe in the division, and we need to build some momentum.
“We have had a downturn in terms of results, but we have to come out of the other side.
“We have to produce far more of the good play we have shown at times this season.”
