doncaster Rovers picked up their second away win of the season with man of the match David Cotterill hitting their first and a Bond own goal clinching the points.

Rovers took the lead on two minutes when COTTERILL beat Cousins with an angled 25-yarder.

Keeper Woods couldn’t hold onto to the first 25-yard free-kick by midfielder Bond on 11 minutes and the ball was scrambled for a corner.

Bennett won his side a 25-yard free-kick but, again, Rovers couldn’t gain any advantage.

Full-back Rose shot high from a near 30-yard free-kick on 20 minutes.

Centre-back Eastman headed clear when Bennett cut in from the left and tried his luck with a long range shot.

Cotterill ran at the Colchester defence only to be robbed of the ball by Massey before he could cross into the six-yard-box.

Rovers midfielder Woods, the subject of an approach by Barnsley this week, was booked for a 27th minute foul.

The Us drew level on the half hour when an angled 20-yarder by OKUONGHAE went in off the far post.

There was a let off for Rovers on 38 minutes when midfielder Bean hit the bar with Woods beaten from the edge of the area after being set up by Sears.

Syers got himself into a good position in the box but was unable to capitalise.

Cousins smothered a low angled shot by Bennett, after he had cut in from the flank, at the near post on 42 minutes.

Midfielder Keegan became the second Rovers player to be booked.

Woods made a confident catch from Sears’ left-wing cross on 45 minutes.

The U’s, who were looking for a first home league win of the season following two draws, were the first to threaten after the break, but Woods got down well to smother Bond’s 25-yard free-kick

But it was Rovers who gained the early advantage with a goal two minutes after the restart - BOND heading home an own goal, under pressure from Cotterill’s 25-yard free-kick.

Bennett, who looked to have handled the ball when trying to line up his shot in a crowded area, troubled Cousins with an effort from 12 yards on 53 minutes.

Rovers skipper Jones was twice in quickly on Sears as the Us chased an equaliser.

McCombe got in the way of a fierce shot by Bean, conceding a corner in the process.

Brown set up a shooting chance for Syers on 59 minutes, which the midfielder fluffed when well placed.

Jones was having another good game for Rovers at the back, and he headed clear from a corner on the hour.

The Us made a change on 63 minutes with Morrison replacing Bond.

Colchester defender Wilson was booked for a 68th minute foul.

Cotterill won Rovers a corner from a deflected 20-yard free-kick.

Rovers made a change on 70 minutes, bringing on defender Husband for Bennett in a bid to shore up their 2-1 lead.

Rovers also made a second change two minutes later - Harper taking over from Syers, who received a good round of applause from the 434 visiting fans.

Hume came on for Brown in the 82nd minute for Rovers. Colchester substitute Wordsworth shot just wide of the left-hand post when well-placed on 86 minutes.

The home side had claims for a penalty from an alleged handball waved away by the referee.
