Nigel Clough, the Sheffield United manager, believes this season’s race for the League One play-offs will go right down to the wire, writes James Shield.

United visit Barnsley today fifth in the table but knowing only nine points separated them from 13th placed Oldham before yesterday’s round of games.

Clough said: “I think it will go right until the end. Possibly right until the very last game before we know who is definitely in there and who isn’t.

“That’s what we are preparing for because that’s the way the division has been.

“Everything changes in an instant. When we went to Gillingham not so long ago, they were talking about getting in there and now they’ve dropped right back into the pack.

“It’s impossible to predict and that’s why we haven’t set a points total or anything like that. We just want to try and win our games.”

Clough added: “That is the thing. It is not just one team that is chasing. There are half a dozen or more who fancy their chances of reaching the play-offs.

“To me, that makes it much harder. To stay ahead of one or two is different to lots of teams.

“If you slip up, someone behind you will capitalise.”
