CELEBRATIONS erupted at the B2net Stadium as three goals in the second half won Chesterfield the League Two title and denied Gillingham a play-off place, writes Graham Walker.
More than 10,000 fans watched as Danny Whitaker put the hosts in front when he beat away team goalkeeper Alan Julian.
Gillingham’s goal ace Cody McDonald equalised when he collected a through ball from Adebayo Akinfenwa and nudged it past Tommy Lee.
But Jack Lester scored from Scott Griffiths’ pass before Deane Smalley sealed the victory with a tap-in.
Chesterfield only required a point for the championship, while Gillingham were hoping Torquay or Stevenage would slip up to get them in the play-offs.
But the Spireites started brightly and dominated possession.
Whitaker’s goal started the title celebrations early in the second half.
