Spireites FT: Oxford 0 Chesterfield 1

CHESTERFIELD attained top marks at Oxford with Marc Richards supplying the vital goal.

There had been concern locally about the game going ahead after a morning downpour saturated the Kassam Stadium pitch, but by 2pm the standing water had cleared.

There were plenty of areas that looked very damp and a blast of sleet soon after that won’t have helped any desires to see the beautiful game at its best.

With less than five minutes on the clock, the visitors were ahead. Brinley slid the ball low for RICHARDS who slotted in an angled shot that McCormick was unable to stop to end the striker’s scoring drought.

Lee made a brilliant point blank save to deny Smalley after Trotman had missed a header and, after a scramble, Whing blazed high as the host’s frustration in front of goal continued.

The home fans were getting restless as their favourites were finding it increasingly difficult to sustain any pressure. Talbot came on for Darikwa.

Constable hit high on the turn as the game moved into the final 10 minutes. Skipper Hird was revving up his charges to maintain their discipline to the end. O’Shea turned on a sixpence in the box but his cross was agonisingly high for an unmarked Richards at the far post.

The 385 travelling fans were making the most noise as Chesterfield moved towards a third win in four, all to clean sheets.
