Forgers' cup dream over

Sheffield Forgers Cup Final dream is over.

Despite a spirited comeback, their hopes of playing in the Midlands Merit League showpiece final were dashed by a drop goal two minutes from time in their clash against the German Exiles at All Saints.

The Forgers, who had gone 11 league games without defeat, soon found themselves 8-0 down and although they pulled a try back through impressive centre Tom Else, the visitors struck again to open up a 12-4 half time lead.

Poor defending allowed the Exiles to increase their advantage but the Sheffield side replied with a 60 metres 'special' from James Kerman and Else added the extras. A further converted try by the visitors left the Forgers almost down and out but a tactical switch proved the catalyst for an amazing comeback.

Vice-captain Simon Waller moved back to his usual position of hooker with the excellent David Hooper going to half back and it was Waller who began the fightback when he charged over from close range. With Else off the pitch he slotted the extras.

The Exiles started to loose their discipline and had a player sent off and another sin binned. Forgers took advantage when flying winger Rob Cuttill went over in the corner to cut the deficit to four points. Paul Holbrook then powered through in the corner to level the scores at 24-24 but Else missed the tough conversion. A few minutes later it was heartbreak time for Forgers as the Exiles slotted home a well-worked drop goal to clinch the tie.

Skipper Phil Stubbs said, "We have had such a great season it would have been nice to finish in a final but I'm so proud of everyone; they showed real grit and determination."
