Goal king Phil Roper helped Sheffield Hallam men’s Indoor squad complete a unique treble when they won the Yorkshire Cup at Hillsborough Leisure Centre.
Originally the Finals should have been run with two pools of three with the section winners meeting in the final but Hull and Bradford dropped out and the format changed to a four-team round-robin event.
That man Roper scored an amazing six goals as Hallam opened with a nerve-shredding 7-6 win over cross-city rivals Sheffield University Bankers after Bankers led 6-4 with six minutes to go. Brendan Creed was their other marksman. Hallam made it two out of two with a 6-2 win over Leeds with goals from Goodfield 2, Smith, Creed, Furlong and a certain Mr Roper while Bankers eclipsed Wakefield 9-4 and then edged Leeds 4-3.
It meant Hallam had to avoid defeat against Wakefield to take the title and they duly obliged with a 7-5 victory, although once again they clinched success with two goals in the final two minutes.
Needless to say Roper was at the centre of it all as he plundered another four goals, while Rhys Gowman added a double and David Smith completed the tally.
It ended an intriguing indoor season during which Hallam’s first team won the National Division 2 North and Yorkshire Premier Division titles plus the County Indoor Cup and the second team also topped the Yorkshire Second Division.
They are also holders of the YHA Men’s Champions Trophy and the County Cup and so not only do they have a unique set of Indoor trophies they also hold both the Indoor and Outdoor County Cups.
During the indoor season Hallam played 29 matches, won 22, drew 2 and lost 5 and scored 166 goals against 108.
