The caddy of Sheffield golfer Matthew Fitzpatrick, pictured, has described the agony of waiting to find out whether he’d qualified for The Open.
John Price was the man on the bag for 18-year-old Fitzpatrick as his two rounds of 69 and 72 around Gullane in East Lothian proved enough to earn his spot at Muirfield on July 18.
Price, aged 59, a member of Hallamshire Golf Club, said: “We thought he’d blown it with a couple of dropped shots over the closing holes.
“Then we had a two-hour wait! We were match nine and we knew the danger was from matches 22 and 23, so it was quite some time.
“It was so tight but in the end he did it - it’s real Roy of the Rovers stuff.”
