Ice dance stars get a bonus

Sheffield's ice dance stars Chrissy Chitwood and Mark Hanretty have been given a New Year boost.

From February 1, the couple, who train at iceSheffield, are to receive funding from the Arena Group to help with their development in the sport.

American-born Chrissy, and Mark, from Glasgow, who moved to Sheffield in 2006 to be based at iceSheffield, are also sponsored by a number of local businesses.

Chrissy said: "This additional funding will enable us to build on the success we have achieved in 2009 and continue flying the Sheffield flag at key competitions next year."

The award caps a great year for Chrissy, 19, and Mark, 24, who skated to success in two prestigious European competitions. They achieved a podium finish in the North Rhine-Westphalia Skating Union Trophy in Germany, with a new season's best score in every element - the compulsory dance, original dance and free dance categories.

The couple took fourth place in the prestigious Ice Challenge, in Austria, ahead of the three other British couples competing for the title and also clinched bronze in the hotly contested British Ice Figure Skating Championships at iceSheffield with a total of 152.39 points which exceeded the minimum Olympic standard of 146.08.
