A metals company which part-owns a hockey side in eastern Europe is to sponsor Sheffield Steelers’ overseas pre-season training camp.
Harsco Metals has sunk money into top Slovakian side HC Kosice and are now joining forces with Tony Smith’s South Yorkshire outfit.
They are financing an exhibition game for Steelers against Kosice on August 30, as part of a five-day training camp trip to Slovakia. And Kosice will play a pre season game at Sheffield Arena in Sheffield at a date in the future.
Later this autumn Steelers’ pre season schedule will also see the club then travel to Hungary with two further games being played in a tournament in Budapest involving Swiss side Club Ambrì-Piotta and Slovakian side HDD Telemach as well as host club Sapa Fehervar.
Coach Doug Christiansen was “ecstatic” about the pre-season plan. “It will give our team a great chance to bond while playing against teams from the top leagues in Europe. It will be an opportunity for our players to showcase themselves. The games will help us practice our systems and see different line combinations.”
