There was a super six champion return for South Yorkshire Orienteers at the British Orienteering Sprint and Middle Distance Championships at Brighton.
Jenny Peel headed the medal parade with double gold, taking the Womens 40+ Sprint title by almost a minute and adding Middle Distance glory 24 hours later.
Club coach Graham Gristwood just missed out in the men’s event when he finished just nine seconds down on winner Murray Strain (Edinburgh) while club and GB teammate Oli Johnson was pipped for the bronze by one second by Sheffield University student Ralph Street in his first year as a senior.
Gristwood went one better in the Middle Distance Championships when he took the Men’s Elite title for the first time by almost a minute from Nottingham’s Richard Robinson with reigning champion Johnson having to settle for bronze after a couple of early errors.
In the Women’s Elite SYO’s reigning champion Rachael Elder finished fourth while a storming run by former Sheffield University student Claire Ward (now running for Edinburgh Southern) saw her take the title by over 90 seconds.
Mairead Rocke clinched the Junior Elite Championship in a time which would have placed her fifth on the senior elite class and Katherine Hall won her first British title in the Under-17 Women’s class by over a minute to make up for the disappointment of missing out on a sprint medal by just one second the previous day.
