IT has been a fantastic start to the season for Olympic gold medal hopeful Jessica Ennis, but the Sheffield star is only too aware that her rivals are equally in good form.

Ennis, aged 26, has already posted a world’s best time in the 60-metre hurdles and broken her personal best in the long jump.

However, world outdoor champion Tatyana Chernova has also shown why she’ll be a threat to Ennis at the World Indoor Championship in Istanbul next month.

Chernova has improved her hurdles time to 8.02 seconds - still well behind Ennis’s best of 7.87 but the Russian has jumped 6.61 metres in the long jump this year compared to Ennis’s 6.47m.

The Millhouses-based athlete, who will be defending her pentathlon title in Turkey, said: “I have seen some of the results some of the girls have been posting already and they are in great shape. I know that going out to Istanbul it’s going to be a real battle.”

Also making big strides is Russian Yekaterina Bolshova who has broken a series of personal bests in winning her country’s multi-events title.
