Several South Yorkshire athletes are in contention for medals at the Northern Championships at Manchester tomorrow (Sat) and Sunday. In the men’s sprints Ben Shields (City of Sheffield and Dearne) and Joe McGrath (Doncaster) are listed for both the 100 and 200 metres whilst Lee Thompson (City of Sheffield) is a strong title hope in the 400 metres.
Joe Lancaster (City of Sheffield), the Yorkshire 1500 metres champion, is a leading contender for the 800 metres whilst his Sheffield team mate Adam Wall should do well in the high jump. Top junior Adam Hague (City of Sheffield) opts to contest the senior pole vault rather than the under 20 age group.
In the under 20 men’s section Rotherham’s Leo Rowley is favourite in the shot. In the women’s events Sheffield based international Louise Bloor (Trafford) does the 100 metres, Abbey Stanley (City of Sheffield) is in the 400 metres and Rotherham’s Sophie Cowper should do well in the 5000 metres.
In the women’s field events Abigail Roberts (City of Sheffield) is favourite for the pole vault.
Chesterfield sisters Alicia and Ella Barrett will be prominent in the under 20 women’s events. Alicia should have little problem winning her number one event, the 100 metres hurdles and is also listed for the 100 flat whilst Ella attempts a 200/400 metre double. In the under 20 field events Barnsley’s Toni Buckingham is favourite to win the shot.
