Sheffield is to stage a prestigious indoor international tennis event next week.
The AEGON GB Pro-Series Sheffield, which involves a strong list of British and overseas world ranked male players, will be held at the Graves Tennis & Leisure Centre, from Sunday, January 16 to Saturday, January 22.
It’s the second event of 2011 on the Pro-Series calendar and as an ITF Pro-Circuit $15,000 event, it is the second tier of international pro tennis, providing the opportunity to gain all important world ranking points plus prize money.
The current list is headed up by last year’s two finalists, Uladzimir Ignatik (Belarus) and Stefano Galvani (Italy). Thirty-three-year-old Galvani, who has a world ranking of 274, returns to Sheffield in an attempt to retain the title he won last year while Ignatik, 20, recently had a career high ranking of 156.
Richard Bloomfield and Dan Evans, ranked British No5 and No6 respectively, head the GB entry. Last year’s semi-finalist, Josh Goodall (British No9), Alex Slabinsky (British No14), and Chris Eaton (British No15) will also be in action.
Play is scheduled to start from 10.00am each day, with qualifying on Sunday and Monday with the main draw from Tuesday to Saturday. The men’s doubles final is set for next Friday with the singles final Saturday.
Entry for spectators is free throughout the week, with daily updates on www.lta.org.uk
