tHE high-five said it all.

Athlete and coach met under the Olympic Stadium and Jessica Ennis and Toni Minichiello just knew.

Yes they’ll talk about having a solid day today but an Olympic gold medal is within touching distance for Sheffield’s Ennis after two personal bests on day one gave her 184 point lead over her nearest rival.

If the 26-year-old holds on today she’ll match the achievement of Barnsley’s Ed Clancy who was part of the men’s 4,000 metre pursuit team that defended their Olympic title brilliantly in the Velodrome.

Ennis said she was ecstatic with her performance but ready for a good night’s sleep after getting up at 5.45am yesterday morning to prepare for her big day.

“I feel tired,” she said. “But I’m absolutely made up with today. To perform like that with two personal bests and to end with a PB in the 200 is a brilliant start. Coming into this I knew I was in good shape, but I could never imagine performing like this. I’ve definitely exceeded my expectations today.

And what does she have to do today? “Just to have three really solid performances and just doing what I know I’m capable of.

“It has been great today but there’s still a lot to work on tomorrow. It has been a long day. I need sleep.”

Clancy will sleep the sleep of a winner. Ennis has 24 hours to wait before she can do that.
