One-stop-shop for coaching

A one-stop-shop for coaches and coaching development has been set up in the region by South Yorkshire Sport.

The Coaching South Yorkshire website is a free service offering coaches a range of employment and volunteering opportunities, industry news, links to courses and local authority contacts, school sports events as well as the opportunity to maintain an online CV.

The database, funded by Sport England, will also make it easier for clubs to locate and employ coaches from all sporting backgrounds.

South Yorkshire Sport hopes to attract more than 1,000 coaches of all abilities from across the region, including student coaches from Sheffield Hallam University, to its website.

Simon Pugh, partnership development officer at South Yorkshire Sport, said: “Our aim is to get every coach in South Yorkshire signed up to Coaching South Yorkshire to ensure there is a co-operative style support structure for coaches in the region.

“It will ensure coaches are kept in the loop about news relevant to the industry locally and they will have better access to training, education and volunteering opportunities. It will also be a great opportunity for coaches to log their training and qualifications and showcase themselves to potential employers.”

Coaching South Yorkshire is an interactive website allowing coaches to provide feedback about the information and services they need. The website is also based on a national system to ensure members’ details can be utilised anywhere in the country.

Coaches will also be encouraged to get involved in Sportivate projects run by South Yorkshire Sport, which provide opportunities for teenagers and young adults aged 14 to 25 to receive up to eight weeks of coaching in a sport of their choice, followed by further access to clubs and facilities.

Ryan Amos, sport development assistant and coach at Sheffield Hallam University, said: “The university has a strong sporting academia with one of the strongest coaching programmes in Europe and we train up to 200 new coaches every year.”
