Kid Galahad is the new European super bantamweight champion.
The Sheffield boxer overpowered Spaniard Sergio Prado over 12 rounds at Ponds Forge,
Every round was a punishing experience for the visitor, who swung desperately when he wasn’t defending, missing much more than he landed.
While Galahad never got the clean punch in to wipe out his Madrid-based opponent, he was always on top and thoroughly deserved the points decision.
For Galahad (Barry Awad) it was another step up the ladder towards his ultimate world title ambition.
*Earlier, Ingle counter-puncher Lee Duncan failed in his bid to progress in boxing’s newest TV tournament.
The Sheffield fighter couldn’t dictate the battle as he’d wanted to against Preston’s Matty Clarkson in the MaxiNutrition Knockout Quarter-Finals.
The Lancashire man powered home too many shots for comfort and bloodied Duncan’s attempts to catch him on the way frequently failed.
In another quarter final, Danny McIntosh was stopped in the third round by Travis Dickinson.
There were impressive wins for Junior Witter against Max Maxwell, Atif Shafiq v Michael Mooney and Sam O’Maison against Jan Balog.
There was also a 10-bell salute to former boxing promoter Mickey Duff, who worked with Frank Bruno and Joe Calzaghe, following his death, aged 84.
*Sheffield light middleweight Sam Sheedy recorded an eight round points win at Doncaster Racecourse last night over Bulgarian Samet Hyuseinov.
It was his 12 straight victory.
John Fewkes campaigning at middleweight drew with Adam Jones.
His Sheffield Boxing Centre buddy Lee Edwards signalled his return to the ring after four years with a win over Dee Mitchell.
Meanwhile Kid Galahad is not expected in the ring at Ponds Forge tonight until around 11pm.
