Steve Goertzen’s first match as player coach of Sheffield Steelers starts with Belfast Giants on the cusp of winning the Elite League championship.

Steelers did not play last night - they are in action at Cardiff Devils, this evening.

But Belfast did take to the ice yesterday.

And Chris Higgins scored twice as Giants saw off the Nottingham Panthers 3-1 to record their 10th straight victory and put them on the brink of their third title.

Evan Cheverie opened the scoring for the Giants with Higgins adding two more, while David Clarke replied for the hosts.

Elsewhere the Dundee Stars beat the Edinburgh Capitals 4-2, to go level on points with third placed Sheffield.

Fife Flyers were 6-4 winners over Ryan Finnerty’s Braehead Clan and the Hull Stingrays saw off Cardiff 5-3. Sheffield-born goalie Ben Bowns saved 40 shots in that game.
