Owlerton Greyhound Stadium is aiming to retain the prestigious Bookmakers’ Afternoon Greyhound Services (BAGS) Intertrack Championship.
The first heats of the 2014 event were staged in Nottingham last week and the reigning champions, a group of professional trainers attached to Yorkshire’s leading stadium, made a promising start finishing in second place.
In their quest to walk away with the title for the second year in a row, the team scored 89 points. Nottingham led the way with 104 points and Kinsley scored 87.
The next is at Kinsley, near Pontefract, on November 2 followed by Owlerton on November 28. The grand final is to be held in December, at a venue to be confirmed, where teams will compete to win £12,500 prize money.
Dave Perry, general manager at Owlerton Stadium, said: “This championship is greyhound racing’s biggest team event so it is an honour to be involved and our trainers made a promising start in this first round
“We recorded three wins on the night from Russelena Inky, trained by Martin Cutler, Coolboy Blitz, trained by Russell Warren and Dean, trained by Barrie Draper. We are now looking forward to the next round at Kinsley where we hope to build on this performance and be in touching distance with the home leg still to come.”
* One of the UK’s most promising young greyhounds is to be based in Sheffield following a successful auction at Owlerton Stadium.
The two-year-old male, Archive Policy, was sold for £6,300, the highest price of the day in an auction that saw approximately £60,000 of business change hands.
A total of 41 out of 43 lots were sold, much higher than the average of between 50 and 60 per cent, and dogs were sold to buyers from around the UK.
Dave Perry, Owlerton Stadium’s general manager, said: “It really was a successful event. Most of the dogs are bred in Ireland but many are trained in the UK and based all around the country, so it’s quite an achievement for the top lot to be kept in Sheffield.”
Archive Policy’s first Owlerton race is due to take place later this month.
Grass Roots readers can take advantage of a great greyhound offer launched by Owlerton. The new Greyhound Pack includes admission to Owlerton, a race card, one drink, two bets and a £2 voucher to spend anywhere in the stadium from £5 per person. The offer is available until 23 November.
