Forty professional golfers helped swell the funds for the ‘Help for Heroes’ charity at Abbeydale Golf Club.

The pro-am saw John Mellor, who was formerly on Wednesday’s books as a goalkeeper, top the pile with a superior back nine in his 67 along with Hillsborough’s Oliver Whitely and Graeme Clark and each received £1,666. Sheffield’s Gareth Davies did get to -5 but in the end finished one shot behind the leading trio.

The team prize was won by Prosol UK Limited with 87 Stableford points. It was a first experience of Abbeydale for many of the professionals and they were quick to hand out the plaudits.

“That’s the best Pro-Am I’ve played in by a mile,” said Adam Stott while Whitely said it was a ‘brilliantly run event’.

It is expected to raise over £15,000 with £4,600 coming courtesy of the evening auction.
