Record-breaker Cutts hits the mark in champion style

Luke Cutts celebrated victory in record-breaking style at the English Under-23 Championships at Bedford.

The City of Sheffield pole vault ace set a new championship record of 5.41 metres, after needing three attempts at 5.30. Cutts failed at 5.50, the qualifying height for the European Under 23 Championships in Lithuania, but he already has a mark of 5.55 to his credit this season and is a near certainty for selection.

Sheffield Hallam student Zara Hohn maintained her superb form in the 100 metres hurdles. Her winning time of 13.37 was a personal best legal run – she has gone faster wind assisted – although it was just outside the European qualifying mark.

Sheffield hammer thrower Matt Lambley improved his personal best three times in the hammer but still missed out on a gold medal. His final best effort of 68.98 metres - well past the championship record - came in his final throw only for Mark Dry (Woodford Green) to top 69 metres to take the title. Lambley was also a tantalising two centimetres outside the qualifying mark for the European Championships

Versatile Tesni Ward won the Under-20 javelin with 45.41 as well as placing third in both the discus (43.99) and shot (12.72). The javelin and discus performances were both personal bests for the 17-year-old Sheffield athlete.
