Sheffield don’t need reminding of the last time they visited Team Northumbria.
It was the 2009-10 end of season play-off for promotion to North One East which ended in heartbreaking defeat for the Abbeydale side.
Fast forward to last Saturday and revenge was oh so sweet as Sheffield came away with a thumping 46-19 win after a six-try blitz against the bottom of the table side.
Sheffield went into the match without prop forward Chris Machen and Joe Cribley and they were replaced by Ramzey Adamo and Tom King who took over from Ewan Reed on the right wing, with Reed moving back to his preferred position of full back. Tom White moved up from the bench to partner John Dudley in the second row.
The trusty boot of Donal Collins gave them a three point lead after eight minutes and four minutes later a further penalty saw him kick to the corner. Sheffield’s pack drove to the line from the resultant line out and Reed sliced his way through for a converted try.Northumbria replied with a converted try after 23 minutes but the visitors made the most of their next opportunity courtesy of a magnificent kick from wing Alex Hill.
The line out was stolen by skipper Andy Kelly and from the driving maul, Adamo emerged from the melee and powered toward the line before popping a superb pass to Laurence Thomas who scored under the posts. Collins added the extras.
Sheffield increased their lead in time added on when Hill sprinted over for another converted try and they went in at the break with a healthy 24-7 advantage.
Within three minutes of the restart Collins bagged a penalty and shortly after Reed touched down for his second try. Then it was the evergreen John Dudley’s turn to crash over and this time Collins added the conversion to make it 39-7.
Sheffield then went walkabout as the home side plundered two converted tries but they regained their control and replacement prop Chris Stanney charged over for try number six which Collins duly converted.
