Aston is in no rush to sign new players

Sheffield Eagles will only target new signings who offer “something extra” as the process of squad building for 2014 gathers pace.

Coach Mark Aston said: “I’m always looking but I’m not rushing. I have a strong squad and people who come in have to be better than we have got, or the young lads we have coming through.”

With the Eagles heading for their first ever Championship leader’s shield Aston is keen to keep a successful squad together. He says some players may be moving on but final decisions on contract offers for 2014 are still to be taken.

“I’m talking to a few and over the next week I hope to finalise a few deals. There is certainly still time for people to cement places for next year,” he said.

Wingers Vinny Finigan and Nev Morrison, hooker Pat Smith and forward Dario Eposito have struggled to get a regular place in the first team.

“There are one or two that go every year whether you want them to or not,” said Aston. “There are questions asked about people who haven’t played a lot of rugby this year but there’s nothing we can do about that, they have to get in the team.”
