Sheffield Eagles coach Mark Aston is ready to make a signing to boost his depleted squad as the new season nears.

“We haven’t stopped looking and if the right person came along we’d make a move,” he said.

“I’ll not just go for anyone, we have a good group of players and some good youngsters we need to give a chance to.”

Aston has spent a month in Australia but any reinforcement won’t be coming from Down Under.

“Not for this year but there are a few who are throwing their hands up to come over in 12 months,” he said. “They are people who are playing a very good standard and we’ll be looking at maybe one or two next year.”

Aston has one of the smallest pool of players in the competition. Six players have left from the squad that won a second successive Championship title with only two new signings.

Three of last season’s regulars are likely to be sidelined for the kick-off at Owlerton Stadium next month following surgery and experienced prop Liam Higgins is out for the season.

But the coach insists he won’t be rushed into moving for players. He added: “Not yet there’s still a long way to go to the start of the season, we’ve got a good squad. There are a lot of clubs going with bigger squads, Leigh and Featherstone have made a lot of signings and have massive squads.

“It’s going to be a very competitive league and everyone here will have to be on their game.”
