Sheffield Eagles have signed Huddersfield Giants second-rower Oliver Roberts on a one-month loan deal.

Director of Rugby Mark Aston adds Roberts, 19, to his Eagles’ flock as he moves to bolster his squad following last week’s decision by Wakefield to recall fellow second-rower Jon Molloy.

Roberts, who boasts Super League experience on his CV, is expected to be in line for his Eagles’ debut when Aston’s side host Hunslet Hawks at The Keepmoat Stadium this Sunday (4.15pm).

“He is a young kid who has a big future in the game,” Aston told The Star.

“He has certainly got something and there is real potential there for him to progress and become a great player. We had the opportunity to get him and have a look so I am delighted that he has joined initially on a month’s loan.

“He has got penetration on the edges; he has good feet and can offload so he just has something a little bit extra which I felt we needed with two games in quick succession coming up. He has something that I have been looking to find for a while.”

Roberts started his career with Bradford Bulls making six appearances in all competitions before securing a move to his hometown club Huddersfield during the close season.

The Eagles have five games during the initial loan period giving Aston plenty of time to assess his new signing before any decision is made over his long-term future.

“We had Jon Molloy on a similar deal to the one we have now,” added Aston.

“The plan is that he is here for a month to see if he likes us and we like him, and if we fit we can see about how we can go forward from there but that will be very much down to Huddersfield.

“He has played a couple of Super League games from his time at Bradford and I know that they didn’t want to lose him. There is no doubt that there is potential there, these are the kind of players that I have always looked for.”

Meanwhile, Aston admitted that there is a doubt over second-rower Duane Straugheir who has a hamstring issue, whilst Misi Talapappa is also nursing a groin problem ahead of Sunday’s game. Prop Mitchell Stringer is set to return from a long standing ankle injury and could make his first appearance of the season.
