Sheffield Eagles director of rugby Mark Aston is excited about the prospect of further developing his burgeoning half back combination of son Cory and loanee Stan Robin.

Both played a key role in the recent victory over Halifax as the Eagles maintained their impressive recent form.

Robin has been a revelation since arriving on loan from Catalans, alongside his French compatriot Thibaut Margalet.

Aston is excited at the way his half-back duo are dovetailing on the pitch, confirming he believes the Eagles still haven’t seen the best of the new look pairing

“I thought that they were much better against Halifax and I really liked the way that they changed positions later on in the game,” the Eagles chief said of Aston JNR and Robin.

“It gave us a different dimension. I think that there is some mileage in both of them.

“The more work that we can do with the pair of them, the better they will become.”

Aston has previously stressed that he would love to keep both Robin and Margalet for next season should the opportunity arise.

Robin’s arrival has also brought some good moments from Aston JNR, and the Eagles supremo believes that having a player of Robin’s pedigree alongside him has taken the weight off some young shoulders.

“He (Stan) has took a little bit of pressure off Cory, I’m sure of that,” Aston added,

“Stan is a runner, and Cory can open up the doors. The ball Cory gave to Matt James at the end of the game against Halifax was terrific, although the referee gave a forward pass which was disgraceful. That was a bit of class from him, and he has got that in him. Cory can create, he can score tries and Stan is a real threat, he has natural pace and strength.

“It is an exciting combination.”

With Whitehaven on the horizon this Sunday (3pm), Aston again reiterated the impact that the Catalans loan duo have had on the Eagles’ recent fortunes, as he looks to lead his side to three straight victories for the first time this season.

“I would love to have Stan here next season, I would like both the French lads,” he stressed.

“They have fitted really well into this club, they are enjoying themselves. They have fetched a real personality to the team, and I am enjoying working with them. I am enjoying working with all the lads at the moment.”
