Sheffield Eagles face being without record try scorer Menzie Yere for the rest of the season following a knee injury.

It’s a massive blow and the latest in a serious of injuries to hit the Eagles as they struggle to retain their Championship title.

“We have 10 injuries and it looks very much like Menzie Yere will be out for the season,” said coach Mark Aston. “It looks like his ACL (anterior crucial ligament) has gone. Losing a player like Menzie is a big blow. There’s nobody coming back to help us and the people we have here are what we have to work with.”

The Papua New Guinea international suffered the injury against Workington Town 10 days ago.

Yere has scored nearly 500 points since joining the Eagles in 2009. Last season he set a club record with 46 and was the leading try scorer across the professional leagues. His power and threat was missed as the Eagles slumped to a 42-34 loss to Doncaster their second defeat of the season at Owlerton Stadium.

The centre would also have been a key player when the Eagles travel to Super League pacesetters Castleford Tigers in the fifth round of the Tetley’s Challenge Cup next weekend.

Yere’s absence forced a reorganisation of the three-quarters against Doncaster with winger Scott Turner moving inside.
