Sheffield Eagles have signed Australian Blake South from North Sydney Bears.
South, 22, will join next season on a one-year contract. He is equally at home in either halfback or hooker role.
South was impressed with the vision of Eagles boss Mark Aston.
“I told my agent I wanted to play in the UK and he got in touch with Mark,” he explained. “Mark watched some video of me and gave me a call. When he outlined his desires for the club I was straight on board. He’s a positive and ambitious coach, which impressed me. He gave me some background on the Eagles, their plans for a new stadium and his goal of leading them back to Super League. Their success over the last couple of years has made me excited.”
South is currently playing in the New South Wales Cup competition Down Under, which is a level below the NRL. However, he sees the Championship as a step up.
He added: “The Championship has more to offer with the opportunity for promotion and two teams dropping down from Super League.”
“The Championship looks to be full of quality and I am looking forward to the challenge of testing myself against high calibre players.”
