Sheffield born Matt Godfrey (24) has muscled his way into the senior England International team for the 2015 European Championship in Belarus in June.

Matt, who works for Pole Fishing magazine, is already a 3-time world champion at Junior level and has represented his country at U18 and U23 levels. He’s currently in a rich vein of form having recently won the coveted Sensas Challenge 2015.

Matt said: “I am overwhelmed to be asked to represent my country - it really is like a dream come true. Even though I was honoured to represent England at youth level, it always seemed worlds apart from the senior team.

“The thought of fishing alongside household names like Scotthorne, Raison and Shipp still hasn’t really sunk in. I cannot wait!”

Matt has also been asked to accompany team managers Mark Downes and Mark Addy to the World Championship in Slovenia, to gain experience. He is also representing England with his Drennan Barnsley team in the World Club Championship in Slovakia.

Mark Addy said: “Matt is an outstanding young angler, we have been monitoring his progress for some time and Mark Downes and I both feel we must get him involved at senior level as quickly as possible.’

n Drennan Team England will compete on four fronts in 2015 as they attempt to win gold at the World Championships and retain their European and Fish ‘O’ Mania International titles.

The team will also compete in the reinstated Home International Championships which will be held in Innescarra, Ireland, the venue where Preston Innovations England Feeder Team were so successful in the 2014 FIPS-ed World Feeder Championships.

The World Championships will be staged in Slovenia from September 6-13and manager Mark Downes has retained the same squad that competed in Croatia last year.

Team: Alan Scotthorne, Sean Ashby, Des Shipp, Will Raison, Steve Hemingray and Callum Dicks. Travelling with Mark Downes and Mark Addy to gain experience will be Lee Kerry and Matt Godfrey.

Team for the European Championships (Jun 21-28, Belarus): Sean Ashby, Matt Godfrey, Steve Hemmingray, Will Raison, Des Shipp, Alan Scotthorne. Travelling with Mark Addy and Mark Downes will be Callum Dicks and Cameron Hughes.

England will be represented by Will Raison and Des Shipp in the Fish ‘O’ Mania International on Sunday 19th July at Cudmore Fishery. They will be looking to retain the title and make it three wins in a row.

The Home International Championship will return to the calendar in 2015 after a break. It will be held at Innescarra, Ireland and the selectors are taking the opportunity to blood new talent and the squad certainly has a young look about it.

Three former Under-23 internationls, Matt Godfrey, James Dent and Cameron Hughes will be joined by young starlet Callum Dicks, who made his debut in the senior squad last year, plus experienced heads Will Raison, Alan Scotthorne and Simon Willsmore. If they do well it certainly bodes well for the future.
