South Yorkshire is well represented at the Northern Under 17 and Under 15 Championships at Middlesbrough tomorrow and Sunday.
The leading South Yorkshire contender for a title is Hallamshire’s Tilly Simpson in the under 15 800 metres.
Unbeaten this year in her own age group, Simpson is UK record holder in the under 15 section and it would be a major upset if she did not add another title to her growing list.
Elizabeth Wilkinson (City of Sheffield) is also a medal contender whilst Grace Harris (Rotherham) should do well in the under 15 1500 metres.
In the under 17 section Cameron Bell (Hallamshire) is listed for both the 800 and 1500 metres and other medal prospects include Leo Rowley (Rotherham) in the shot and Joshua Lindley-Harris (City of Sheffield) in the pole vault.
In the under 17 women’s events Billie Jo Harris goes in the 100 metres with her Sheffield team mate Brodie Jones expected to do well in the 200 metres. Brodie’s sister Bronte goes for a shot and discus double.
n Britain’s double Tour de France champion Chris Froome wants athletics to follow cycling’s lead and invest more money in anti-doping.
The ongoing doping allegations in athletics threaten to overshadow this month’s World Championships in Beijing.
“From what I understand, testing hasn’t been at the level that it is in cycling” Froome said.
“It is going to have to invest a lot more heavily in anti-doping.”
