Sheffield Sharks defeated Manchester Giants 82-77 in a nail-biting finish at the EIS Sheffield to advance to the next round of the BBL Cup.
The first quarter was dominated by Sharks, opening the game with a 9-2 lead.
TJ Robinson continued his fine form, netting five baskets in the opening quarter to propel Sharks into a 22-13 lead.
Giants brought their usual brand of physicality and intensity, which led to the Sharks scoring five free throws after a number of fouls.
The second quarter continued with Sharks point guard Mike Cook dictating the play in the attack and Jerrold Brooks providing a high level of energy to drive his team forward.
However, Giants managed back-to-back baskets, showing signs of a revival with Yorick Williams looking influential after coming back from injury, hitting a three-pointer to delight the away fans.
A basket right on the buzzer from former Shark Olu Babalola sent the teams in at half time with Sharks leading 38-33.
Mike Tuck’s three baskets in quick succession and ten points in a matter of minutes from Giants guard Stefan Gill kept things tight, with Sharks going into the final quarter with a 64-55 lead.
Sharks closed the game with excellent controlling play by Brooks, with his seven assists and 17 points earning him MVP.
Robinson closed out the game with two free throws to add to his 20 points, after a late three-pointer by Giants’ Yorick Williams brought the game to just a one point difference.
