Boss slams ‘poor’ Owls

Despair: It's agony for the Owls and Clinton Morrison after another home defeat.

Despair: It's agony for the Owls and Clinton Morrison after another home defeat.

GARY Megson last night branded his Owls team performance as “poor” and picked out substitute Jermaine Johnson as the one shining light in the 3-1 defeat to Brentford.

The winger went on in the second half and earned praise from the manager for his pace and drive.

Megson said: “I thought we had only one performer who did anything like what you would expect and that was JJ.

“That was the best I’ve seen him do. He played at a tempo and with a bit of enthusiasm and zest. We are getting that from quite a few of the subs when they’ve gone on but they’ve got to do that when they get the opportunity of 90 minutes as well.

“I felt that was the biggest game for Sheffield Wednesday since the Crystal Palace game last season when the club went down. We did exactly the same; didn’t play with any enthusiasm or great desire and that unfortunately for us, in this division, is what it is all about.”

He added: “Some of the things that go on at this football club beggar belief. There are eight games left and we’ve got to grind out as many points from those as we possibly can because you are not suddenly going to start doing everything entirely differently.”

He said Rob Jones, who scored but went off in the first half, had taken a bang on the head and had been taken to hospital.

The Owls boss said he will accept the misconduct charge issued by the Football Association yesterday for swearing and it means a fine but no ban but he understands that a second charge is being levelled relating to his comments to the media and he said he would have something to say about that imminently.
