Boxing: Beaten - but Gaynor’s on up

DEFEAT in Prizefighter will make Chad Gaynor, not break him, according to promoter Dave Coldwell.

Gaynor earned himself virtual and vociferous fans at Wolverhampton’s Civic Hall in the welterweight eight-man tournament despite exiting at the hands of eventual winner Glenn Foot.

Thrybergh’s Gaynor drew fellow unbeaten fighter Calum Cooper in the quarter-final and saved himself six minutes of over-exertion with a first round TKO.

Birmingham’s Cooper flew out of the corner but Gaynor rode out and effectively laughed off his evident lack of power. As they met in the centre of the ring, Gaynor thudded him backwards with heavier shots.

Gaynor stepped up the onslaught and landed with an array of straight shots before the referee jumped in with Cooper beached on the ropes.

With Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn offering an extra £2,000 knockout bonus Millennium-trained Gaynor boosted his overall purse for the night with that win.

In the semi-final Gaynor faced another unbeaten fighter and one who had also boosted his finances with a win inside the distance in his quarter-final.

The first round went to Foot purely on work-rate although he missed wildly over a dozen times with hooks as Gaynor ducked skilfully away.

Gaynor caught Foot off balance in the second but the seasoned amateur of 100 contests, did well to tie Gaynor up in the third to progress to the final where he beat Welshman Dale Evans.

Coldwell told The Star that at just 21 Gaynor demonstrated a small portion of what he’s about as a fighter and he did it to an American audience too.

He said: “Chad showed the rest of the boxing public what he’s capable of. He’s well known in Rotherham and the Manchester gyms but now he’s out there.

“Prizefighter trended fifth globally last night. My Twitter has gone daft and so has his.”

Plaudits came from the world of Twitter with boxer Curtis Woodhouse saying: “gutted @ChadGaynor couldn’t pull out the win but you have seen the young man has a bright future.”

Gaynor will fight on Coldwell’s Magna card headlined by Woodhouse’s English title defence against Shayne Singleton on February 22.
