Sheffield RUFC v Morpeth Chris Machen escapes to go on to score a try

Sheffield duly put the disappointment of the previous week’s encounter at leaders Billingham behind them with a five-try romp against Morpeth.

It was just what head coach Nick Crapper had ordered as a powerful and workmanlike performance brought them a comprehensive 38-3 victory in their North 1 East clash at Abbeydale.

Ramzey Adamo returned at loose head prop while Dave Ellis moved up from the bench to the second row after the neck injury suffered by Soloman Prestage at Billingham.

But it was the kicking ability of Donal Collins that came to the fore to give Sheffield early control with penalty kicks after five, eight and 13 minutes.

The visitors landed a penalty of their own six minutes later but that was a mere blip in Sheffield’s domination as Carl Mortimer crashed over wide out on the left and Collins added the conversion to bring about a 16-3 half time scoreline.

Two tries within the space of five minutes, courtesy of both centres, put Sheffield out of sight.

The first came after nine minutes when Joe Cribley took advantage of some sloppy tackling to score out on the right and Collins landed the extras. Then Simon Tillyer followed suit but the conversion was missed.

However, it was Collins who turned try-scorer with 10 minutes remaining when he went over to secure the bonus point and five minutes later skipper Andy Kelly completed the rout when he ran in a five-pointer.

Team: Ewan Reed, James Montgomery, Joe Cribley, Simon Tillyer, Alex Hill, Donal Collins, Matt Poste, Andy Gravil, Carl Mortimer, Ramzey Adamo (Will Bennett, 59), John Dudley (Tom White, 54), Dave Ellis, Laurence Thomas, Martin Balshaw, Andy Kelly (capt). Other replacement: Chris Machen. Fourth-placed Sheffield travel to fourth-from-bottom Northern on Saturday.
