HAVING conquered the world Steve Judge has now set his sights on picking off the European crown.

Judge, aged 39, from Eckington, won the World TRI 3 paratriathlete Championships in New Zealand last year, and says his immediate goal is to secure the European title this June in Turkey before even considering a tilt at Paralympic glory at Rio 2016.

He said: “I’m ecstatic that I’ll be able to compete in Rio but while I’m on the road there it is on the back-burner a bit because it is four years away.

“There’s other events before then that take priority such as the European Championships in Turkey in June.

“The main thing is to stay injury free but it’s still a long way off.”

Judge has also praised Sheffield Triathlon Club for its support and says he’d like to play a greater role with the club when he retires.

“The club has a really strong core, it has good foundations,” he said.

“What it does well is provides really well organised events throughout the winter that enables the athletes to get in good quality training.

“Being triathletes everyone is competitive so that adds to it. They put on so many different things that I’m not able to do everything - it really is that good.

“I often feel bad that when I do get time to train then that is all I can do.

“I’d like to be able to do more. It’s not just the officials, but there’s also the volunteers that shout out split times and do all the little things.”

Sheffield Triathlon Club is one of the oldest in the country having been formed a quarter of a century ago.

With 290 members it is one of the biggest in the north of England and includes members ranging in age from seven to 75.

The highlight of the Club year is the Hathersage Hilly triathlon on 30 June.

This attracts triathletes from all over the country with its reputation for being a tough race in stunning surroundings.

The club has recently been promoted to first division of the Sheffield and District cross country league, the only triathlon club to be in the league.
