Loan ace throws in added talent

WEDNESDAY fans knew that recent arrival Michail Antonio would add his ability as a winger to the team.

But the loan forward has also provided a more unexpected attacking weapon - a long throw.

He hurled the ball to the six-yard box during the derby and it is something that Gary Megson plans to use in future.

“We knew about it before we signed him; we do our homework,” said the Owls boss.

“It’s not the be all and end all. It’s obviously not the reason we signed him, but it’s something we can utilise.”

The Owls were looking for Antonio to show pace and strength on his debut against United; he did that and provided some good crosses, including one that almost made a first-half goal for Ryan Lowe.

Megson believes than Antonio showed what an asset he can be and revelled in the occasion of the derby.

“I’m really pleased with him,” said the Owls manager. “He’s good in the air, strong and works hard.

“For him to be thrown into that game was a big ask - he did really well.”

Antonio said on Twitter: “The atmosphere was unreal ... great performance from the boys.”

The Reading man is not the first Wednesday loan winger to possess a long throw. Ben Marshall also had the knack.

When Megson tried to sign Antonio before Christmas he wanted to field him on one flank and Marshall on the other.

“I’d rather see Ben in a blue and white shirt but it’s nice to see him doing well for Leicester,” said the Owls chief

The ex-Hillsborough star has played in the Foxes’ last two games: 2-1 and 1-0 away wins against Norwich and Derby.
