Madine wants to fight for his place

Sheffield Wednesday striker Gary Madine will continue to resist any attempts to loan him out when the temporary market opens again tomorrow, the Sheffield Telegraph understands.
Madine is understood to have rejected loan moves to four clubs before last week’s transfer deadline, as Owls boss Dave Jones attempted to get him some time on the pitch away from Hillsborough.
The 22-year-old striker hasn’t started a league game for Wednesday since the 0-0 draw at Huddersfield in December, and is expected to again be on the bench on Saturday when Wednesday host Derby County on Saturday.
With Football League clubs able to sign players again on a temporary basis from tomorrow, Madine’s future could again come under the microscope - but sources close to the club understand that the Gateshead-born striker intends to force his way into Jones’ first-team plans and focus on preserving Wednesday’s Championship status.
Although the decision to reject loan moves was seen by some fans as Madine being content on the bench at Wednesday, the player is determined to prove his worth in the Championship.
Madine, who scored 18 goals in Wednesday’s promotion season last term, has netted just twice in the current campaign.
And his cause hasn’t been aided by the signing of Leroy Lita, who has matched that tally in just two games since arriving on loan from Premier League Swansea City.
Jones has hailed the impact that his loan signing has had, admitting that his side “needed someone to score the scruffy goals” - and added that he hopes that the players around him can learn from former Reading man Lita.
Youngster Cecil Nyoni, meanwhile, has left Wednesday by mutual consent after admitting that he has fallen out of love with the game.
The Zimbabwe-born youngster, a regular in Lee Bullen’s Owls development side this season, broke the news on his personal Twitter account - and it was soon confirmed by a Wednesday spokesperson.
Caolan Lavery, another of Bullen’s youngsters, made his second appearance of a loan spell at Paul Sturrock’s Southend United on Tuesday evening and Jones said: “We are hoping Caolan is going to learn from it. He has got the safety net of coming back to us.
“We have got a very good player in Caolan but it is a little bit different playing in front of 50 people in the Under-21s than in front of 5,000 at Southend.”
Former Owls striker David Hirst has signed up as an ambassador for Camp Merlins, set in the grounds of Mylnhurst Preparatory School & Nursery in Sheffield.
