BARRY Robson joined Sheffield United despite receiving offers from two Championship clubs, The Star can reveal.
United, who also captured Jonathan Forte on loan before last night’s transfer deadline, convinced the Scotland international to agree a short-term contract with Danny Wilson’s side during talks with Bramall Lane’s hierarchy on Wednesday.
Although Wilson refused to divulge the identities of their rivals for Robson’s signature, this newspaper understands that Burnley and Millwall approached the experienced midfielder following his departure from MLS outfit Vancouver Whitecaps.
“Barry had other options on the table but fortunately he chose us,” said Wilson, who also recruited Danny Higginbotham and Jamie Murphy in January. “We were able to sell Sheffield United to him and we’re delighted that we did.
“Barry could have gone a division up because he had that opportunity. But it was great to hear that he wanted to come on board with us.”
Robson, previously of Celtic and Middlesbrough, could join Forte in the starting eleven which entertains Coventry City tonight after the Southampton striker completed an emotional return to South Yorkshire six years after leaving for Scunthorpe.
Forte, who scored five goals in 11 appearances for Notts County last season, will remain at United until the end of the season when negotiations about a permanent switch could take place should the move prove a success.
Wilson said: “People will be familiar with Jonathan’s talents and we are delighted that he has accepted our offer to come and play for us.”
