Sheffield United: Blades look to bounce back

DANNY Wilson, the Sheffield United manager, has challenged his team to bounce back from their shock defeat at Stevenage by dealing Brentford’s hopes of automatic promotion a painful blow, writes James Shield.

United slipped behind Uwe Rosler’s side in the League One rankings after being swept aside 4-0 at the Lamex Stadium three days ago.

But they will enjoy an opportunity to potentially regain second place when the Londoners, who have played a game more than the South Yorkshire club, visit Bramall Lane this weekend.

Swindon Town and Yeovil, fifth and sixth respectively, are scheduled to meet at Huish Park tonight.

Wilson told The Star: “There were times when we played some good stuff (against Stevenage) but we didn’t impose ourselves enough. We realise that is something that’s got to change.

“We’ve got a tough game coming up. We know that.

“But it’s also a good game and a good opportunity. That’s the way we view it.”

Wilson, whose team are third with nine matches of their season remaining, was withering in his critique of United’s performance against opponents fighting for their lives at the other end of the table.

Having travelled to Stevenage searching for a historic seventh consecutive clean sheet, they succumbed in dramatic fashion with Daniel Lopez scoring a hat-trick before Lucas Akins added a fourth.

United had previously gone over 10 hours of football without conceding a goal and Wilson said: “We didn’t do the things we’d been doing so well before that point. We didn’t defend from the front as we have been doing and we were working in different compartments, if you like, rather than as a whole.

“But we can’t dwell. We’ll look at what happened, why it happened, learn the lesson and move on because that’s what you have to do.

“One thing is for certain. We can’t play like that again.

“But it’s important to remember that was one game. That’s how we want it to remain.”

Tony McMahon and Kevin McDonald are both eligible for selection against Brentford after escaping the cautions which would have triggered automatic bans but Jamie Murphy (hamstring) is a doubt.
