SHEFFIELD United have told Motherwell they will not increase their offer for Jamie Murphy despite scheduling further negotiations aimed at bringing the former Scotland under-21 international to Bramall Lane.

Danny Wilson, the League One club’s manager, has made a winger his top priority during next month’s transfer window following talks with directors at Bramall Lane.

However, Murphy is not the only potential solution coaching staff have identified as they look to address concerns about their squad’s lack of width.

The Star understands that United considered making an approach for Scunthorpe’s Mark Duffy, who could feature when Brian Laws’ side visit South Yorkshire today, before the recent deadline for emergency loan signings.

Wilson said: “We’ve spoken (with Motherwell) and I’m sure we’ll speak again.”

As this newspaper revealed in August, Wilson, together with head of football operations John Stephenson and chief scout Billy Dearden, believe players from the Scottish Premier and Football leagues can represent better value for money than their English counterparts.

United have monitored Murphy’s progress for at least four months but, with Salary Cost Management Protocol restricting the amount they can pay, officials are not prepared to pay more than £100,000 for the 23-year-old whose contract expires at the end of the campaign.

Speaking before United climbed to the top of the table courtesy of last weekend’s victory over Crawley, Wilson dismissed claims that offers will be invited for George Long and Harry Maguire. But he did admit United would have to “self finance” any forays into the transfer market.

That could see fring players allowed to depart, possibly on loan, with Ross County among those to make contact with United in recent weeks.
