Sheffield United: Blades transfer plans hinge on festive schedule

DANNY Wilson has acknowledged he could be forced to revise his plans for next month’s transfer window if Sheffield United suffer a spate of injuries over the Christmas period.

Wilson, who opened talks with Motherwell about their former Scotland under-21 winger Jamie Murphy earlier this week, made the admission ahead of today’s visit to Crawley Town which pits 10th against third in the League One table.

United are scheduled to face Scunthorpe and Hartlepool before English football re-opens for business on January 1 and Wilson said: “We know the areas where we would like to strengthen if we possibly can.

“But all of that could change if we started picking up some problems.”

“At the moment we know the positions but things can change quickly,” the United manager added. “Priorities can change like that.”

Although Wilson has refused to elaborate on his attempt to sign Murphy - “I’m not going to disrespect Motherwell” - The Star can shed further light on the subject of United’s talks with the SPL club.

An offer, believed to be worth £100,000, was submitted to Fir Park immediately after last weekend’s goalless draw with Tranmere Rovers.

United, who in the event of that being accepted would make an initial downpayment before settling the balance should certain targets be met, have refused to meet Motherwell’s £200,000 valuation of a player whose contract expires at the end of the season.

Even without the constraints imposed by Salary Cost Management Protocol, which limits the amount United can spend on players, one independent expert last night described suggestions the 23-year-old is now worth nearly a quarter of a million pounds as “wide of the mark.”

Murphy has scored eight goals so far this term.
