Speaking ahead of tonight’s crucial League One encounter with Crawley Town, the Sheffield United manager predicted his team’s rivals for a top two finish could soon buckle beneath the pressure of the promotion race.

With five of the division’s leading six clubs failing to win last weekend, Wilson said: “I think my lads will cope and embrace the pressure.

“If you look at results elsewhere recently, you’ve got to say there’s pressure on one or two others now as well. Maybe we’ll start to flourish and the others will start to get butterflies.

“Do I think a couple of sides will drop away between now and the end? Yes.

“What we’ve got to do is make sure we’re not among them.”

“Would I take a spot in the play-off now if it was offered to me? The answer is no,” Wilson added. “Because we want the top two.”

Sixth placed United entertain Crawley searching for their first win in the competition since Boxing Day while the visitors, having taken seven points from their previous six outings, are 14th.

Wilson was critical of his players’ first-half performance during Friday’s 2-1 defeat by Coventry City but insisted their much-improved display after the interval provided a template for success.

With defender Matt Hill hoping to return to action at Shrewsbury Town this weekend after recovering from a fractured jaw, Wilson could chose to start new signings Barry Robson and Jonathan Forte against Crawley.

Former Greece international Angelos Charisteas was among the trialists in the United under-21 team beaten 1-0 by Huddersfield yesterday.
